Hundreds get tested for COVID-19 Monday

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Hundreds of cars formed long lines at one COVID-19 rapid testing site in Baton Rouge today.

Gulf Coast Occupational Medicine offers rapid testing for COVID-19, meaning results take only 15 minutes. The tests are just 50 dollars and are done with the patient still in their car. You do not need a doctor’s note to get a test.

“Our tests have a very high percentage rate, we’re between 94 and 96% effective on our tests,” sarah taylor said.

Maddie Garbiras just came back from Florida.

“People who we were there with tested positive so we decided to come in,” Garbiras said.

Garbiras is a part of the 18-29 age group that has recently seen a surge in COVID-19 cases. She says she appreciated the convenience of finding out right away.

“It’s good for everyone to be able to know quicker,” Garbiras said.

Taylor is an administrator at the testing site. She says in the past week and a half the site has seen a jump in positive cases and the number of people being tested.

“We’re back up to testing at least 200 sometimes 400 a day and our positive percentages have gone up close to 20%.” Taylor said.

A chunk of that 20% includes young people.

“This line has been at least 35-40% younger people,” she said. “A lot of them are coming through with their parents.”

Taylor says if things continue on the track they’re on, she expects to see more people getting tested and more results coming back positive.

She says she encourages everyone that stops by to be safe and continue practicing mitigation efforts like social distancing and wearing masks in public.

The site on Airline Highway is open weekdays from 10am- 4pm.
