Non-profit continues with business as usual after arson

Local News

BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD)- It Takes a Village Baton Rouge, a local non-profit that serves the homeless community out of a home, has been lost to arson.

Now all that is left behind is ash and rubble. Executive Director Tiffany Simpson said all is not entirely lost.

“The two gentlemen that stayed in the house basically lost all their personal possessions, all of our clothing donations were lost, the only thing in that house that was salvageable was our cooking supplies, which allowed us to be able to cook today,” Simpson said.

For years the organization has been committed to feeding the homeless. Even after a huge loss like this, they’re still making good on that promise.

“You know the picking of the pieces, all that is just stuff, we can get it again,” said Simpson. “Every Sunday these people who are out here today know that we’re going to be here, and that means something, they may not be able to count on anything else but they know that every Sunday we’re going to be out here.”

54-year-old Audrey Fredrick was arrested Saturday morning for allegedly setting fire to the home. Simpson said she believes in accountability, but there’s a bigger issue here.

“Surviving homelessness for so many just robs them of their dignity and their humanity, and I know this individual to be an addict, and any of us who have known addicts know that they make really stupid decisions sometimes, just jail alone won’t solve that person’s issues, ” said Simpson.

As the organization continues to pick up pieces, Simpson is just grateful for how the community is already helping.

“There’s a 75 year old man who lives in that house and we got him a bed yesterday, we’re doing the right thing and when your doing the right thing everything works out,” said Simpson.

Right now the organization is asking for monetary donations as well as warm clothes, if you would like to help visit the It Takes a Villiage website.
