TANGIPAHOA PARISH, La. (WDSU)—The wife of late Congressman-elect Luke Letlow will carry out her husband’s plans for Louisiana’s 5th District.

Julia Letlow, a Republican, was elected Saturday.

She takes over for Ralph Abraham, who her husband worked for as chief of staff.

Luke Letlow won the position Dec. 5 in a runoff against state Rep. Lance Harris. Just 24 days later, he died from complications of COVID-19 before he was officially sworn into office. Julia Letlow launched her campaign shortly following her husband death, vowing to carry on his platform. Harris did not challenge her.

Julia Letlow a native of Monroe, is a mother to two and an administrator at the University of Louisiana Monroe, where she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in speech communication.

The 5th District extends from northeast Louisiana into the state’s central region and into portions of Tangipahoa and Washington parishes.
