NEW ORLEANS (BPROUD) — Traffic lanes on Highway 61/Samuels Road in Zachary will be shifted starting Saturday due to construction on the Comite River Diversion Canal project, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The Comite River Diversion Canal project aims to reduce flooding for residents in the area, according to officials.

The notice sent by the Army Corps of Engineers specifies that the southbound lanes will be shifted starting Saturday, May 14 and the northbound lanes will be shifted starting Saturday, May 21. Officials said signs will direct drivers from temporary roads to Samuels Road.

“The primary project features include a control structure at the Comite River, a control structure at Lilly
Bayou, three control drop structures at the intersections of the diversion channel with White, Cypress
and Baton Rouge Bayous, a drop control structure in the vicinity of McHugh Road, two railroad
bridges, four highway bridges and one parish road bridge,” the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers outlines in a news release.
