BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) —  Law enforcement wants residents to remain vigilant when it comes to car burglaries. According to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s office, over 30 car burglaries happen each night. Now there is another type of car theft that deputies are warning residents about.

Car burglaries are at an all-time high nationwide and here in Louisiana. Law enforcement wants to bring awareness to the slider method that is happening all over the state.

“When a motorist gets out of their vehicle, they leave their door unlocked and the suspect would enter a person’s car and remove things of value out of it and possibly while the motorist doesn’t even realize it,” said Christian Reed, the public information director for Louisiana State Police.

Though there has only been one reported ‘slider’ incident so far in Baton Rouge, Casey Hicks with East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office says she can not stress enough the importance of locking your doors and closing windows at all times.

“These individuals go out and they scope out the area and they look for the opportunity to commit these crimes. So the best thing that you can do is not give them the opportunity,” she said.

Police say to keep your wallet on you and always be aware of your surroundings. The more distracted you are, the higher your chances are becoming a victim.

“Remaining vigilant, having a plan in place, using a certain gas pump. They could be in the center as opposed to the end. I think it would be a good practice not to leave things in their vehicle that is of value,” explained Reed.

Suspects involved in the slider in Baton Rouge have been arrested. Both subjects were incarcerated in the parish prison on unrelated charges and re-booked for the burglary.
