After years of debate, Lee High School will now be renamed.
Thursday, the East Baton Rouge School Board voted to rename the school Liberty High School.
This comes after weeks of heated and emotional discussion and the calling for the resignation of school board member Connie Bernard after defending Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
But the name Liberty High School came with some push back. A few members believe the school should’ve been named after PBS Pinchback, Louisiana’s first black governor.
“We have a school system that is 81% African American, yet we have no schools that have been named after African Americans,” Dadrius Lanus said.
The first day of school for EBR parish is set for August 6. Officials say the former name will be taken down as soon as possible.
