Livingston Parish school board did not mention high-profile case involving a former teacher

Local News

Some people are disappointed after the Livingston Parish school board meeting didn’t answer any questions about a high-profile case involving a former teacher.

Board leaders didn’t mention anything about Cynthia Perkins. She’s the former Westside Junior High teacher charged with child rape and more than 60 counts of child pornography.

The meeting lasted around 20 minutes and when asked why Perkins was not on the agenda board members said they had no comment.

Community activists say they wish the school board would be more transparent.

“Not a word was spoken [about Perkins] and I’m disappointed,” Taryn Creekbaum said. “I certainly thought that tonight’s meeting of the school board would have some answers, but it wasn’t on the agenda.”

Muriel Lewis says she was shocked when the school board didn’t talk about the high-profile case.

“The whole situation has been unsettling,” Lewis said. “[The school board needs to] bring everyone to the table and allow them to talk about what their concerns are and address them.”
