CareSouth Medical and Dental Clinic has offices throughout East Baton Rouge and Ascension Parish, and as the coronavirus spreads, officials say they’ve been preparing since February.

The number of coronavirus cases is now at 13 in the state and impacting areas in north and south Louisiana.

Officials say many patients have called with questions concerning the disease especially with those cases increasing in the state.

Although there are now confirmed cases in East Baton Rouge Parish, the healthcare facility has increased the number of sanitary stations and have practiced social distancing for the safety of workers and patients.

“We started sending out messages on February 17th to staff in regards to the virus just to take those prevention and precautionary measures. We have changed nothing as it relates to protocol in regards to cleaning of our healthcare facility because this is what we do on a daily basis,” says CEO Matthew Valliere.

Symptoms are similar to the flu and one doctor says the best practice would be to visit your physician.

“I would tell them to because the symptoms are so similar, is to come in and get a flu test done so you’ll know. Also get that travel history and that contact history so that we can better advise them on what the next steps are,” Chief Medical Officer Gregory Garner says.

Medical experts are encouraging the public to remain calm through this process, practice good hygiene by washing your hands, and disinfect surfaces that are touched frequently on a daily basis.
