Local leaders work to get COVID tests to the public

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Finding an at-home COVID test or making an appointment has been a major challenge for people across East Baton Rouge Parish. Two local politicians pitched in to help some people out.

Senator Cleo Fields and Metro Councilwoman Carolyn Coleman saw the big need for COVID-19 testing in Baton Rouge so they’re working hard to make the drive-through testing as well as at home tests more available.

The two passed out over 100 of the much sought-after at-home tests. Each car only got one box, which had two tests inside.

Sen. Fields helped set up a drive-in testing site at the Leadership Institute which had over 800 visitors yesterday.

“To let you know that it’s real, to let you know that the folks are here wanting this, needing this. They have begun to line up,” Coleman said.

Cars wrapped around the Butler Community Center over an hour before distribution began. The CDC classified East Baton Rouge Parish as a high transmission area for the virus on Wednesday and cases are skyrocketing to the thousands each day.

“I don’t want to say we are going backwards. We are going forward and hopefully, people will feel a little bit more comfortable as January gets here and behind us… it’s going to get worse before it gets better,” Sen. Fields said.

He is working to have more of these events in the future to combat the prevalence of COVID-19 in the community. He hopes there will be more availability of the at-home tests come January. For now, he is urging people to stay home, get tested, and get vaccinated if they haven’t been already.

“It’s just so important that people get tested but it’s even more important that people get their vaccination shots. This is a disease that is not going to stop,” Sen. Fields said. “It’s going to continue to grow and it’s going to continue to wreak havoc on people of this community and all over the nation.”
