BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD)- Academy Sports + Outdoors teamed up with Southern University to surprise the South Baton Rouge Jaguars Youth Football Team with a $2,500 shopping spree.

As part of the Louisiana Youth Football League, the team was able to shop the store for new football gear, uniforms, and training equipment.

“They were just through the roof like they were all over the place, they were saying thank you, and I’m like ‘Oh your welcome sweetheart’,” said Southern University Director of Athlete Services Ajennae Dillon.

For the last seven years, South Baton Rouge Jaguars have partnered with Southern University to help counterbalance the cost of equipment and uniforms for its youth athletes by selling programs at Southern’s home games.

Head Coach Terri Boyd said this event will positively impact his boys.

“This is a big morale booster for the kids, you know, our motto is if we don’t work, we don’t eat,” Boyd said. “So you know we’ve been putting in the work to God be the glory today we get to eat.”

The team is currently undefeated. Dillon said they’ve been working on and off the field for this deserved moment. The boys also had support from the Southern University football team helping them pick out gear. Coach Boyd said it’s important they have positive male role models.

“It gives them something to believe in, it gives them something to look up to, knowing that if he could do it, I could do it,” said student-athlete Braelen Morgan.

“Trying to keep them on the straight and narrow path, there’s so many different vices that they could be into,” said Boyd.
