Long time Baton Rouge icon ‘Buckskin’ Bill Black has died

The longtime host of “Storyland” and “the Buckskin Bill Show” has died.

William, “Buckskin Bill” Black, passed away Wednesday at 88-years-old.

Black hosted the programs for years, which made him a household name but that’s not where his legacy ended.

In the late 50’s and into the 60’s, he led the charge to bring a zoo to Baton Rouge. He enlisted the help of all of us children to buy the zoo’s biggest animal, raising enough pennies in just a few months to buy not one but two elephants.

After he left television, Black continued his service to Baton Rouge through various community projects and was a long-time member of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board.
