NAPOLEONVILLE, La (BRPROUD) – Louisiana State Police (LSP) are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash involving a dirtbike that killed a Napoleonville man.
LSP was called to an accident at the intersection of Mathew Street. Through an investigation, LSP learned that 35-year-old Ray Gilton was driving a dirt bike south on the southbound shoulder of LA Hwy 1 at a high speed. A 2001 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling north on LA Hwy 1 and was turning left onto Mathew Street at the same time Gilton was traveling.
Gilton did not come to a complete stop. He hit the side of the vehicle and was ejected off his bike. Louisiana State Police said Gilton was not wearing a DOT-approved helmet and was killed due to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office. The Chevrolet driver was wearing their seatbelt and has minor injuries.
As part of the investigation, a toxicology sample was collected from Gilton and submitted for analysis. The driver of the Chevrolet gave a voluntary breath sample. No alcohol was detected in his breath.
This crash is under investigation.
