LAPLACE, La (BRPROUD) – Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a two-vehicle crash that killed a woman on U.S. Hwy 61 North on Thursday, Oct. 7.

An investigation revealed that a 2002 Chevrolet Tracker, driven by 26-year-old Mary Thompson from LaPlace, was trying to enter U.S. Hwy 61 North from a private driveway but failed to yield to an incoming 2016 Freightliner that was traveling north in the left lane of U.S. Hwy 61.

LSP said that the vehicle Thompson was driving was struck as she entered the path of the Freightliner. Thompson was unrestrained at the time of the accident and was ejected from her vehicle. The St. John the Baptist Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced her dead at the scene.

LSP said the driver of the Freightliner was restrained and was not injured during the crash. Toxicology samples were obtained from both Thompson and the Freightliner driver and have been submitted for analysis.

LSP said the crash remains under investigation.
