LSU student Michael Long was arrested Friday for allegedly punching a female student in the face and breaking her nose.
The incident happened at the Kappa Alpha house on the LSU campus.
Long was charged with second degree battery.
Many of the students we spoke with today were shocked that this actually happened right down the street.
Sky-Lynn Nazario, a Freshman at LSU, said, “I didn’t think even especially down here like that that could happen that people would do that. Since I’ve been here I’ve never felt unsafe. It just shows how anything can happen”.
Some of the students I spoke with just didn’t want to talk about it.
Lynne Medley-Long, from the IRIS Domestic Violence Center said that remaining quite is one of the worthj things we can do.
She said, “Abuse in any form is unacceptable. Our society still treats abuse, domestic violence and dating violence as sort of a taboo subject. W need to talk about it. Get it out in the open. Putting a spotlight on the issue of abuse will make it easier to stop. Education is the key to identifying signs and symptoms of abusive behavior”.
Putting a stop to violent acts like this should not just be left to the victims.
All of us share the responsibility of putting a stop to the violence.
Police say the victim is still in pain after the assault.
She is scheduled for surgery to correct the damage to her nose.
After this experience she may have scars that we won’t be able to see.
