BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A man accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend and her son was indicted by a grand jury Thursday.

Brynnen Murphy, 20, of Baton Rouge was indicted on June 30 on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree feticide.

The search for a missing mother and her son turned tragic on Monday, March 14. 24-year-old Kaylen Johnson and her two-year-old baby boy Kaden were reported missing on March 5th.

Authorities said Kaylen was found dead in the wooded areas on Burbank Drive and about 30 minutes later her son was found dead 20 miles away near Central Thruway.

Murphy, Kaylen’s boyfriend, turned himself in to the police on Monday, March 14. At the time of his arrest, he faced charges of two counts of first-degree murder.

“He did give information as to where the bodies were, as for why it happened, we don’t know,” said L’Jean McKneely, a spokesperson for Baton Rouge police. “Very tough. Tragic situation.”

Kaylen’s sister tells BRPRoud that Kaylen’s car was found at Murphy’s apartment on the Friday before his arrest on Monday. Police tried to confront Murphy then but did not get any answers.

“We found her car without the license plate on it. And from there it raised an eyebrow. One of the guys made contact with him, he refused to give information and disappeared,” said McKneely.

Murphy was not Kaden’s father, but the family says the couple was expecting a child in three months.

“He knew we were actively looking for him. He knew the mom and the 2-year-old was missing. So from there, the family was reaching out. He was out on the streets and he decided to turn himself in,” said McKneely.

Baton Rouge police said the bodies may have been deceased for at least a week.
