LIVINGSTON PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) – The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in a shooting that left one injured in French Settlement on Wednesday.
The sheriff’s office says Douglas Maurras, 45, was at his residence in French Settlement and fired gunshots at a neighbor. The neighbor was hit once and sent to the hospital but is stable.
LPSO also said Maurras went down Highway 42 and fired shots at a parked work van and then traveled to Springfield and followed a potential victim home. Maurras allegedly shot at the victim but missed and left the scene.
He was caught and taken into custody. The sheriff’s office said he was wearing a ski mask and body armor. LPSO said Maurras is the only suspect and is responsible for all the incidents.
He was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated criminal damage to property, illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities, simple damage to property, criminal trespassing, unlawful use or possession of body armor and two counts of battery of a correctional employee.
The bond was set at $800,000.
French Settlement Chief of Police Cary Mosby said that he was in training at the time of the report and an officer who had signed off for the day took the witness statements.
“As many know, there was a shooting in French Settlement yesterday, Wednesday evening. The person reporting the incident did the correct thing and dialed 911. We always instruct and encourage individuals to dial 911 for the fastest response. As Chief, I was in training, and my officer on duty had already signed off for the day and was working overtime, taking statements from witnesses involving another investigation. So, dialing 911 allowed parish dispatch, who does an awesome job every day 24/7, to quickly notify deputies and officers who are on active duty to respond. I would like to personally thank Sheriff Jason Ard and his deputies, detectives, as well as Port Vincent PD for their quick response. I realize the rumor mill on social media was running ramped with questions or inaccurate information about the incident, but law enforcement is not at liberty to discuss information or details of an ongoing investigation. I will reiterate the Sheriff’s statement there was no danger to others in the general public, as French Settlement, PD, and law enforcement agencies who back up each other during such incidents were patrolling and watching areas such as schools, roadways, and businesses. Thank you for your support,” Mosby said.
