LAPLACE, La. (BRPROUD) – Louisiana State Police are investigating a crash involving a St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office (SJSO) vehicle that killed a man in LaPlace Thursday night.
Troopers were called around 10 p.m. on May 19 about a crash on Airline Highway in LaPlace. According to LSP, the crash took place when an on-duty SJSO deputy was driving a fully marked 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe patrol unit in the right lane at the same time 45-year-old Dave Walker was trying to cross the southbound lane.
State Police said as Walker entered the right lane, he was hit by the Tahoe. Authorities say that there are no designated crosswalks in the area of the crash and there was very little lighting.
Walker was pronounced deceased at the scene. State Police say the driver and front seat passenger of the sheriff’s office unit were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash but were not injured. Investigators said impairment is not suspected of the deputy.
