Family of DJ killed in fiery crash shares memories of the local ‘legend’

BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD)- Local Baton Rouge DJ, Kevin Blakes, 53, was killed in a traffic crash on May 10 in the 1500 block of Plank Road.

The crash involved a 2007 Lexus R35 and a 2014 Chevy Silverado. The Lexus crashed into the rear end of the Chevy as the Chevy was trying to merge into the southbound lane of Plank road from southbound I-110, BRPD says.

The gas tank on the Chevy exploded, causing a large fire.

Blakes was trapped in the vehicle and died from injuries from the fire.

The front passenger in the pick-up truck and four passengers from the Lexus escaped with no injuries.

The driver of the Lexus, 25-year-old Jadavian Serf, was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for Vehicular Homicide, 1st Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring, DWI, Reckless Operation, and Resisting an Officer.

The family of Blakes is now calling on Baton Rouge drivers to drink responsibly.

“Baton Rouge area, the surrounding area, they lost a legend I tell you,” Toras Blakes, father said. “Really a bad, sad tragedy, for the family, for the community. because he was loved by many many people.”

A public memorial will be hosted for the local celebrity on May 16 at Ruffins Daiquiri Shop at 8 p.m.

Baton Rouge Police Traffic Homicide Detectives is currently investigating this crash.
