Matthew Mire appears in Ascension Parish court

GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) — Matthew Mire, the man accused of killing a Master State Trooper and a mother of three, and shooting several others in three parishes appeared in an Ascension Parish courthouse on Tuesday.

Judge Katherine Tess Stromberg reviewed 25 motions. This is common practice, according to District Attorney Ricky Babin.

“It’s kind of standard motions. None of them require evidence, they were just argument and the judge took most of the rulings, potential rulings under advisement,” Babin said.

Mire sat still in the courtroom wearing a bright orange jumpsuit and shackles wrapped around his body. His family members were in the courtroom. They declined to comment.

One of the 25 motions from the defense wants the judge to make sure the state is sharing all of the evidence, something Babin says they are already doing.

“The motion you are talking about is the discovery motion and we give the information as we have it. We don’t withhold anything, it’s just that state police hasn’t delivered all of the documents,” Babin said.

There will be another motion hearing next month which will be the next step in a long and detailed case.

“We are still in the early stages. There is a trial date set in September. We are going to do everything in our power to make that trial date and get it done then,” said Babin.

Matthew Mire pled not guilty to charges in Livingston Parish during an arraignment last week where he is facing two counts of attempted first-degree murder, one count of home invasion, one count of theft of a motor vehicle valued at $5K or more but less than $20K, and one count of simple burglary.
