Mayor-President Broome announcing food retail initiative to combat food deserts in EBR Parish

Mayor-President Sharon Weston-Broome along with several partners in the Baton Rouge community are coming together today to announce a new initiative launching Tuesday morning.

The Baton Rouge Healthy Food Retail Initiative is an innovative financing program was created to attract supermarkets, grocery stores or other fresh food retailers into designated food desert areas of East Baton Rouge Parish.

Some goals from the initiative is to increase access to affordable healthy foods, promote the sale and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and expand economic opportunity and keep dollars local.

Mayor Broome has worked to help bring more food to the North Baton Rouge community over the last year through different programs because of the lack of fresh resources in the area.

The announcement is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
