Metro Council approves multiple annexations into Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The Baton Rouge Metro Council approved annexations out of St. George and into the Baton Rouge city limits during Wednesday night’s meeting.

Woman’s Hospital, Resource Bank, and 12 homeowners in the Willow Ridge subdivision are now part of the city of Baton Rouge after a 9-2 vote.

Woman’s Hospital falls under the proposed limits of St. George. Woman’s Hospital COO Kurt Scott says he wants the hospital to be part of Baton Rouge.

“We are also a part of the Baton Rouge health district. Being part of the city of Baton Rouge allows us to do that. We are committed to the women and infants and this will not change any of that. We serve folks throughout the region and throughout the state,” Scott said.

Some residents in the Willow Ridge subdivision say this decision will only divide the community and limit emergency services.

“Twelve out of 40 homeowners want back into Baton Rouge. You will get passed back and forth from the sheriff’s department and the city all day,” said Creg Boyd, Willow Ridge subdivision resident.

East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome supports these requests.

“Our department heads have provided documents showing that there will be no additional cost of these annexation properties,” she said.

Andrew Murrell, a spokesman for St. George, says it’s illegal to approve annexations during a pending lawsuit.

“That trail date will determine if the city of St. George is allowed to incorporate. If and when, our incorporation will relate back to the day the election results were certified,” said Murrell.

The trial date for St. George is set for January 10, 2022.
