EXCLUSIVE: Mother of local rapper ‘Gee Money’ speaks out for the first time since his 2017 death

Garrett Burton also known in the music world as ‘Gee Money’ was tragically killed while leaving the recording studio in Baton Rouge in 2017. His mother says even though it’s been two years, the painful memories still feel like yesterday.

Burton was only 22-years-old when he died and his mother said he just about to get started in his music career.

Ava Burton says she’s received a tremendous amount of support from his fans from around the country and the world.

She describes her son as loving and respectful who didn’t like confrontation.

The two year anniversary of his passing was in September, but she says some days are harder than others.

“It hasn’t gotten any better. When I think it’ll getter it feels like yesterday. It still feels the same to me. When you have a kid that you’re used to seeing all the time and talking to them. Then he was about to leave because he got a record deal and was getting ready to leave Baton Rouge. All that plays into how I feel right now. I think that’s horrible for me,” says Burton

24-year-old Deandre Fields was arrested and booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for a second degree murder charge in June.

Burton says she’s ready for the trial to begin and get justice for her son.
