New Orleans officials say motion-sensitive cameras are catching people in the act of illegally dumping trash in the city’s neighborhoods.
A news release from the mayor’s office on Friday said the 10 cameras were installed last year in areas identified by the sanitation department as chronic dumps.
Officials say they have provided evidence against people in 16 cases. For example, in March, camera footage showed the license plate of a pickup truck used to dump a sofa and television in Central City.
Officials note that illegally dumped tires and other items can harbor mosquitoes, flies and rodents.
Footage from other city surveillance cameras provided evidence this year against French Quarter businesses that were dumping waste into catch basins.
