BATON ROUGE, LA (LOCAL33) (FOX44) – The American Society of Breast Surgeons has released new screening mammography guidelines.

The new guidelines are based on a patient’s individual breast cancer risk profile.

The guidelines, which are supported by the American College of Radiology, recommend all women undergo formal risk assessment by the age of 25.

Dr. Mindy Bowie, Breast Surgeon at Woman’s Hospital, said in women with average risk, the ASBrS suggest annual screening start at age 40.

For those with increased risk of developing cancer, such as a family history of the disease, recommendations suggest a range of comprehensive screening strategies based on individual risk factors.

Woman’s offers mammograms at the main hospital campus on Airline and at West Feliciana Hospital.

They also offer mammograms on a coach that travels to 15 parishes in the state.
