BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — State Fire Marshal Chief Butch Browning handed over his title to a new chief on Monday.

There is a new leader at the state fire marshal’s office — Chief Dan Wallis.

Wallis was the Zachary Fire Department Chief. He has been a firefighter for nearly 30 years. Chief Butch Browning said he is leaving the state in good hands.

“Today is about welcoming someone who’s going to make this agency better than it ever could have been,” said Browning.

Wallis said he plans to start with employees and the community.

“We have to evaluate the positions of our employees, we have to support our employees through education. We have to create an environment of trust with the customer. I think that is already there but I am going to have to get out. I am going to have to get out into the community and learn who our customer is and learn what the expectations are,” said Wallis.

Wallis said he is pushing his employees and the state of Louisiana to be better. He issued his first challenge to the public, to make sure they have a working smoke alarm.

“We believe that is the lifeline,” said Wallis. “And it is our goal to have a smoke alarm in every home in the state of Louisiana.”

Wallis officially takes over the position on Monday while Browning plans to enjoy his retirement in Louisiana.
