NEW ROADS, La. (BRPROUD) – The New Roads Police Department is hosting a fundraiser benefiting the family of a toddler killed in Baton Rouge.

The New Roads Police Department is small and pride themselves on being a family.

It is the reason Chief Kevin McDonald, said they’re backing their brother in blue.

“When we have troublesome and hurtful times like these, we all pull together” said McDonald.

Last week, Azariah Thomas, 2, was shot and killed.

His father, Vince Hutchings Jr., is a New Roads officer and is now left to plan his son’s funeral with the rest of his family.

“From the night Vince Hutching, Jr. called me, I could hear the hurt in his voice and I’ve been talking to him pretty much every day since then” said McDonald.

Thursday, the department will host a fundraiser hoping to help out the family during a difficult time.

McDonald says, the money will be used to help out with medical bills, funeral arrangements and any other needs that the family might have.
