New sandwich shop in Baton Rouge is sure to cure those munchies

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) ––– Have the munchies? Well, look no further! Baton Rouge’s newest restaurant is a marijuana-themed sub shop.

Long-time Baton Rouge residents Tommy and Meredith Wiggins are the two behind the sandwich shop and are no strangers to the food industry. Meredith currently owns Island Girl Bake Shop, and Tommy has spent the last 15 years working at Maxwell’s Market.

Tommy was working for the Raising Canes corporate office in the early 2000s when on a work trip in Colorado, he tried Cheba Hut for the first time. “I was just blown away by not only the food but the service and just the whole atmosphere. The vibe was amazing, and I was like, man, I want to be a part of this,” Tommy says. Roughly 20 years later, the couple’s son graduated high school, and they wanted to do something new. “We saw Cheba hut was wanting to franchise in Baton Rouge so we were like, this is an opportunity, we’re going to be empty nesters, but we’re still young, let’s do it!” Meredith says.

Cheba is another word for marijuana, and the theme of the restaurant is no secret. Nearly every inch of the building references marijuana. “First off, you notice the marijuana theme. Now that’ll get people in here, but we go past that. To us, it’s more about that love, the acceptance, and the culture that everybody can come in here. It doesn’t matter what you look like, who you love, even who you voted for, as long as you’ve got love in your heart, you’re welcome in Cheba Hut,” says Tommy.

When asked why the couple wanted to create that environment, they said they lost all of their belongings in a house fire in 2009. Friends, family, and even strangers rallied around them, so they want to give back to the community that helped them get back on their feet. “We need a place where we can be that way all the time, not just when there’s a crisis,” Meredith says.

The menu is loaded with options, and staying true to the brand, all sandwiches have fun marijuana-inspired names. You can find the full menu here.

If you’re in the mood for an adult beverage, you’re in luck! The restaurant also has a full-service bar that opens up to the private outdoor patio.

You can experience Cheba Hut firsthand starting Monday, August 9, at 411 Ben Hur Rd. If you want more information, you can visit their website here
