Yesterday, we had horses on the interstate and today another animal decided to break free.

It just tried to hop away! You’ll never know what will happen when you spend the day at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo.

Earlier today, a male Nile Lechwe (antelope) became startled & hurdled out of his exhibit, breaking a portion of the exhibit’s railing in the process.

Expertly trained staff chemically immobilized the animal and took him to his off-exhibit holding area.  Zoo officials say the lechwe will remain off exhibit until further evaluation of the exhibit can take place.

Exhibit repairs are already underway. There were no injuries to staff or guests.

The ongoing training for these types of situations certainly paid off & the Zoo is pleased with the extremely quick response, containment and return of the animal to safety.
