BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Residents in the Dixie neighborhood say sometimes they can’t even go to sleep without hearing gunshots and that it’s up to the community to start doing better.
On Wednesday afternoon young people were involved in gun violence, again.
Police were called to the 2700 block of Weller Avenue after two men were shot. According to BRPD, two male adult victims were injured from apparent gunshot wounds. Both were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Family members said their 19-year-old was shot.
Surveillance video shows a vehicle pulling up to the victims’ home and firing multiple times. Witnesses on the scene said one victim was holding his baby in his arms during the incident.
“People don’t value life out here. Like life is precious, real precious,” said a Dixie resident. “Growing up, it was nothing like gun violence. Probably fight this day and be friends next day. It’s like people want to kill somebody.”
Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul said his officers are finding most shootings are from retaliation.
“Instead of cooperating with us, we are seeing retaliation. That has to stop,” said Paul.
Two witnesses, under the age of 10, said they heard gunshots then watched a man fall to the ground.
“They got kids out here so how does that make the neighborhood look,” said a Dixie resident.
Paul said solving crime is not just a police issue, but also community.
“There are people who are listening right now, that are listening to this show who has information that can stop the next shooting,” he said.
Police do not have a motive or named a suspect yet.
