BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The number of COVID-positive patients at Baton Rouge General’s Bluebonnet and Mid City campuses continues to climb following a weekend surge.

There are 118 COVID-19 patients in the two facilitates, a sharp increase from last month’s combined total of 10 patients, according to BRG spokesperson Katie Johnston.

BRG had its largest number of COVID-19 patients, 169, in April 2020. Then, only 16% of COVID-19 patients were in the ICU.

As of Sunday morning, 44% of BRG’s COVID-19 patients were in the ICU.

BRG will open another unit as a COVID-19 ICU to accommodate the increasing number of patients in critical condition. This marks the fourth time BRG has expanded capacity during this surge.

Johnston reported that 35% of BRG’s COVID-19 patients are younger than age 50, and 92% are unvaccinated.
