BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)- Ochsner Health and The Renaissance Hotel partnered to host a pop up vaccine clinic for hospitality workers.
The general manager of The Renaissance expects this summer to be a busy year for the industry. He found the clinic as an opportunity to help employees protect themselves before the summer.
“You’re seeing a pent up demand here there is a shift in business where you are seeing a lot more transit of business come through because of people wanting to get out, travel, take a vacation, see family,” said Nathaniel Tennehill, Renaissance general manager.
Ocshner officials say it’s crucial for hospitality workers to get the shot now as we approach a busy tourist season. these workers are vulnerable to the virus because they are the ones in contact with people from all over the country.
“Not only are they in contact with locals, you have people coming in from everywhere. So, of course, the numbers vary in every state that you’re in and we have people that are traveling and coming to Louisiana so it’s important for them. Even though we have gotten a lot of people vaccinated in this state, it may not be the same thing for some of the people who are traveling in,” said Annette Martin, Oschner supervisor of community vaccine clinics.
The Louisiana Hotel and Lodging Association reports more than 13,000 people lost jobs in the hospitality industry since the start of the pandemic. Ochsner officials say the vaccine is hope for people to return back to the workforce.
“This is a great way to get them vaccinated, get them protected and get them out there to serve,” said Charlene Ho, Ochsner director of population health.
Ochsner held the clinic from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. to give workers the opportunity to get vaccinated no matter what shift they work.
Jasmine Goodlow is the bar manager at the Marriot. She is face to face with the challenges of working in the industry during a global pandemic.
“I come in contact with a lot of people so it was an easy choice for me to get it. Protect me and my family,” Goodlow said.
Hospitality workers had the chance to enter a raffle to win a night stay at a participating hotel.
