BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) – One person died Thursday afternoon following a fire near South Harrells Ferry road.
Baton Rouge Fire said, the fire started around 1:40 p.m., Thursday afternoon.
Investigators are working to figure out what caused the blaze that ended with the homeowner losing his life.
People who live near President Davis Drive were frantic, worried about their neighbor.
“I called 911 to alert the fire department and emergency not knowing if anyone was still in the house or what was going on and then when I came back this way I saw the commotion and figured it was really something serious” said Deborah Riche.
The home in the 3700 block caught fire, trapping the man inside.
“It’s a lot of stuff that the person has been collecting over a few years and it’s going to be a lot of stuff to go through” said Justin Hill, Public Information Officer for Baton Rouge Fire Department.
“Every Time the garbage was going to be passing, he had a pile of trash out front so I don’t know if he wasn’t able to get out of the house” said Riche.
Fire officials stop short of calling this a hoarding case, saying although there were a lot things in the home, crews were able to enter.
“They were able to gain access pretty quickly after arriving and make entry and they located the victim” said Hill.
As freshly delivered boxes sit near the door, investigators took notes and snapped photos of the scene, a scene neighbors call horrifying.
“It’s sad, it really is sad” said Riche.
