One shot fired at Cortana Walmart, no injures

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Monday afternoon was a bit chaotic outside Walmart near Cortana Mall.

“Oh (expletive) , they shooting.”

Casey Hicks with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office said, one shot rang out after a man believed to be shoplifting from the store was confronted by a Sheriff’s Deputy and the store’s Loss Prevention Officer.

“At that point, there was some type of struggle where the suspect possibly, he was grabbing at the deputy and loss prevention was also involved in the struggle and a shot went off. A gun shot.”

Throughout the afternoon, law enforcement officers could be seen checking nearby stores and patrolling the area while helicopters hovered above.

“The suspect fled the scene. We set up a perimeter around the shopping area to make sure the suspect is not in the area, but we are still looking for that suspect.”

The gunshot scaring many people in the area. This video shows some of them running away.

“Obviously we had a lot of concerned people here at the store to hear a gunshot go off.”

While the search continues for the man at the center of the incident. Hicks is thankful that it end without injuries.

“The number one thing is no one was injured and we’re really grateful for that.”
