BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)- The annual Pedal for Peace event is a community gathering of members to join a bike ride to spread awareness on peace.

Councilman LaMont Cole says due to the uptick in crime, this year’s turnout was one of the highest.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the current homicide rate is on track to beat last year’s numbers.

“We want them to come together and have an event that promotes unity and family,” Cole said.

Mayor Sharon Weston Broome joined the bike ride. Broome said the message today is to uplift the community after a year of hardships.

“We have a diverse group out here and they are representative of the community. So hopefully people will rally around the message of peace in our community,” Broome said.

Pedal for Peace is a three-mile bike ride starting from Shoppers Value Parking Lot to Howell Park located at 5509 Winbourne Ave.
