PORT ALLEN, La. (BRPROUD) – Port Allen City Marshal Michael A. “Mike” Zito died on Monday, Dec. 19. Since then, tributes have poured in, including one at the Court Street Cafe, 805 Court St., Port Allen.

Restaurant manager Chae Fitzgerald has been there for 13 years. In that time, Fitzgerald saw Zito stop by with his crew of lifelong friends every day for at least eight years. She considered Zito to be family.

They would be there when the cafe opened at 7 a.m., Fitzgerald said, and Zito liked to order pretty much the same meal every time — two eggs scrambled, sometimes white toast and coffee with no cream.

After a while, the manager said, Zito did not have to order anything, she would just know what to make for him.

On Thursday morning, Zito’s friends gathered at Court Street Cafe to order his usual meal in his honor.

“He was always there. Anytime you needed him, he was there,” Fitzgerald said. “He was funny and always give me something to laugh about in the mornings.”

John Summers said Zito was a family friend. He said Zito would give the shirt off his back if he could help you and was known as a rock in the community. He will be missed.
