BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD)- The East Baton Rouge Coroner’s office have identified a man killed in what the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is calling an attempted murder-suicide.
East Baton Rouge Coroner investigator Shane Evans identified the man as Richard Ray, 53.
Authorities say Ray pulled out a gun, shot his wife and then shot and killed himself. EMS confirmed the woman was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The incident happened Tuesday afternoon outside a counseling center along Picardy Ave. near Essen Ln.
People who work along Picardy Avenue say, it was a very scary scene, recalling the sounds they heard.
“I heard like a pop-pop and thought maybe it was somebody doing construction and then a second not even two seconds later. It sounded like somebody was unloading a gun” said a witness who wished to remain anonymous.
The quiet street erupted in gunfire and could be heard nearly a block away.
“You could hear like this lady scream, like this bloody murder scream. A scream like a scream I’ve never heard before” said a witness.
A spokeswoman with EBRSO confirmed the shooting resulted from a domestic dispute.
“There was some sort of domestic situation with the couple in the parking and which a man pulled out a gun, he shot the female and then he turned the gun on himself and shot himself” said Casey Hicks, East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer.
Witnesses said, the couple had just completed a counseling session when the scene unfolded recounting the images they said will never leave their memory.
“I’m trying to not think about it, but as I sit there just like the thoughts, the sound, that screams” said a witness.
The motive of the shooting is still under investigation.
