Prairieville man found guilty of attempted 2nd Degree murder in 2018 shooting

PRAIRIEVILLE, La (BRPROUD)- Officers with the Gonzales Police Department responded to a restaurant parking lot in reference to a shooting that happened July 1, 2018.

Upon arrival, officers found a male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and identified the shooter as 34-year-old James Batiste. Following the shooting, Batiste fled the area but was apprehended shortly after. Officers learned that Batiste and the victim were having a conversation when Batiste exited the vehicle and displayed a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun. As the victim tried to flee the area, Batiste shot him in the shoulder and back multiple times.

Batiste was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later released.

On July 15, an Ascension Parish jury found 34-year-old James Batiste guilty of Attempted 2nd Degree Murder. Batiste faces up to 50 years in state prison.
