Promise of Justice Initiative releases report on deaths in EBR Parish Prison

There are many prisoners in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and some do not make it out alive.

The Promise of Justice Initiative delivered a report on “Dying in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison” on the levee in Baton Rouge.

The Promise of Justice Initiative report analyzed “the deaths of twenty-five (25) in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.”

The non-profit organization listed the names of each prisoner who has died in the prison:

The Promise of Justice Initiative report stated that between 2012 and 2014, the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison “accounted for 12% of deaths in local jails in Louisiana.”

Co-author of the report and attorney at the Promise of Justice Initiative, Shanita Farris, said, “Our criminal justice system is broken here in Louisiana, and one of the damaging effects of a dysfunctional system is the preventable deaths of community members.”
