Officials with the Lake After Hours say response has been good since first opening, and they see no signs of slowing down.
According to medical director Dr. Kevin Dibennedetto, hundreds of tests have been conducted with the positive rate of patients being around 28 percent.
Initially ,Dibennedetto says they expected to see around 50 patients a day, but on average, 60 to 70 tests are given a day, but experts believe they can do 100.
A site in Ascension Parish was being looked into, but with the success of the O’donovan Drive site on Our Lady of the Lake campus, patients in ascension will likely be referred to Baton Rouge, but precautions are still being taken for those who can get tested.
“Certain people are affected more than others. The number one mortality risk factor has been high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity. All those come into play when recommending if you should or should not get a test. We need to take some of those factors into account,” says Dibennedetto.
Several offices are in the northern part of East Baton Rouge Parish, and a site in the area could be beneficial.
“We have a clinic in Central and one in Brusly. If it comes down to it, down the road if we decided to put some of the tests in the clinic. The problem with that is you’re exposing a lot of people at your clinic. The more you can do outside, the better it is so that’s how we’re trying to approach it,” he says.
Those people who believe they may have been exposed to the virus or are exhibiting symptoms can find out if they meet CDC criteria for Rapid COVID-19 testing by going to www.lakeurgentcare.com and selecting the red “Virtual Visit” button in the middle of the page.
Anyone that qualifies for Rapid COVID-19 molecular testing during the “Virtual Visit” will be scheduled for same-day or next-day screening. Those tested for COVID-19 will know their results in minutes.
The site will be open from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday through Saturday and the Denham Springs location will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
The Baton Rouge site location is at 5200 O’Donovan Dr.
