BATON ROUGE, LA—A new bipartisan nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of women in Louisiana officially launches today. Ignite Advocacy Network aims to educate the public about the state of women in Louisiana, advocate for positive policies, and activate its network to influence lawmakers. Everyone is invited to join the network. Members will be alerted of policy issues and may be asked to take action such as contact lawmakers, attend public hearings, and write letters to the editor.
“I’m tired of having Louisiana at the top of every bad list and bottom of every good list when it comes to issues important to women and their families. It seems many people, men and women, around the state are tired of this too, but they are not sure how to influence change. I’m hoping that IgniteAdvocacy Network can be their guide,” said State Representative Helena Moreno, who founded the organization. “It’s time for all of us together to ignite into action. Plain and simple.”
Ignite’s focus areas include (1) Employment & Earnings, (2) Health and Well-being, (3) Educational Opportunities, and (4) Violence Prevention. Anyone interested in improving these areas for women and girls is invited to join the network by signing up at igniteforchange.org.
Ignite represents the next phase of an awareness effort spearheaded by Rep. Moreno last May called #ItsNoJoke. The social media campaign was a result of a shameful ‘joke’ amendment proposed for a bill to fight human sex trafficking. #ItsNoJoke shared statistics and information about the conditions women face in Louisiana, such as the grade of “F” (ranked 49th) the state received for women’s overall health and well-being from the Institute for Women’s Policy Research. Louisiana also ranks 49th in the United States in wage equality, with women earning on average only 68 cents for every dollar men earn in similar positions.
