Rescue Alliance assists families in need after the winter storm

Local News

BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) ––– When the power goes out, and resources are limited, some families must choose between keeping the generator running and buying food for their pets.

Jonathan Henriques from Rescue Alliance says, “We’ve been seeing a lot more of the abandoned animals that are actually coming out… they’re looking for food, they’re looking for shelter, a place to stay warm.”

Rescue Alliance is a non-profit organization that focuses its efforts on rescuing animals in need of adequate shelter and providing assistance to families struggling to take care of their pets.

The winter storm last week offered the opportunity for Rescue Alliance to step in to help vulnerable animals. Henriques says the organization has rescued roughly 41 cats and 25 dogs from the winter weather event.

“We’ve actually been delivering dog houses to dogs that were tied up to trees,” says Henriques. Most of the dogs they encountered were able to stay with the owner after adequate shelter was provided.

The organization partnered with The Humane Society of Louisiana to provide food and supplies to pets and families in need.

The need does not end there, and Rescue Alliance is answering calls for assistance in north Louisiana, which was hit harder by the winter storm than the capital area.

With such high demand, Rescue Alliance is asking for donations for their pet food drive to provide food to those families in north Louisiana. Henriques hopes to get enough donations to extend that help to the even harder hit Texas.

The pets in their care are often available at one of the many adoption events hosted by Rescue Alliance. Due to their partnerships, they are able to charge only $65 in adoption fees, and each pet is up to date on vaccinations and has been spayed or neutered.

Their next adoption event will be Sunday, February 21, at the PetSmart in Gonzales, 40451 Lowes Ave, Gonzales, LA 70737, from Noon to 4:00 P.M.

Donations can be dropped off at:

  • Petstar Animal Care of Prairieville, located at 38432 W. Airline Drive (during regular business hours)
  • Petsmart of Gonzales, located at 40451 Lowes Avenue (during regular business hours)
