GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) – Tensions run high in Ascension after Parish President Clint Cointment was removed from the East Ascension Parish Drainage Board. Now, people living in the parish say they’re ready to vote certain council members out of their position.
Drainage is such an important topic, especially during the ongoing hurricane season. Monday, six parish board members, Corey Orgeron, Aaron, Dempsey Lambert, Teri Casso, Dal Waguespack and John Cagnolatti, voted to remove Cointment, despite many residents voicing their opposition, and now, they are fighting back.
“We are organizing right now to start recall process on several of the different councilmen,” said Sonny Edwards.
Edwards says that he has lived in the parish for decades and takes pride in his community. The vote to remove Cointment upset him, so he created a Facebook group pushing for the recall of the six council members.
“If we are going to start with the number one biggest pain on the council and then we will move to the next biggest pain and then go on down from there,” Edwards said.
The group will need 25% of voters to sign the petition along with a list of over requirements, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s website.
“It’s not a quick process, so we might have to make sure we’ve dot our I’s and cross our T’s to make sure that we get it right because we don’t want to have to go back and do this again,” said Edwards.
Councilman Travis Turner, who voted to keep Cointment says it would be best to accept the vote and move on.
“To me, the best outcome at this point now is to take what we have and to the absolute best that we can with it for the citizens of Ascension,” said Turner.
But the grassroots fire has not burned out and Edward’s Facebook group has over one-thousand members.
“It just sends chills down through my spine,” Edwards said. “That people are actually done, they are finished with what these people tried to do and what they continue to do.”
The group plans to meet on July 11th to organize and create a strategy for their next step.
BRProud reached out to the six council members that the residents want to recall, and have yet received a reply. The station also reached out to Cointment for his reaction and is waiting on a comment.
