Residents of River Bend Lakes can breath a little easier tonight.
They are one step closer to putting a stop to a controversial barge-cleaning facility on the shore of the Mississippi River.
Both the residential population and LSU brought up concerns about possible environmental effects from the facility.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Planning Commission voted Monday to rezone the property from heavy industrial to commercial, but residents can’t celebrate yet.
Linda Lynch, a resident of River Bend Lakes, said, “I am hoping that on Wednesday the Baton Rouge Metro Council follows the planning commission and votes to rezone the property so that nothing like this can ever happen again”.
If the metro council approves the rezoning, this could block the Texas based Tubal Cain Marine Services from building the barge cleaning site.
