While it’s a difficult topic to talk about, child sexual abuse is very real and could happen to anyone.

In just the city of Lafayette alone, there are 217 registered sex offenders.

According to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, in 2016, there were approximately 861,837 registered sex offenders in the United States.

Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff Ivy Woods tells News 10 that anyone can fall victim to a sex offender, “Juveniles, kids, infants.. There’s no borders when it comes to sex crimes and they don’t discriminate.”

And he’s not wrong; according to LPSO, over 80% of convicted adult rapists report that they have molested children in the past. Officials also state that most convicted sex offenders have committed many assaults before they are caught.

The sheriff’s office lists some safety tips on what kind of behavior to watch for in adults that may be indicative to sexual interest in children.

These include:

  • Insistent on touching, kissing, tickling, wrestling with or holding a child even when the child does not want affection
  • Regularly offers to babysit many different children for free or takes children on overnight outings alone

They also provide a list of behavioral and physical warning signs that a child has been abused, such as:

  • Refusing to talk about a “secret” he or she has with an adult or older child
  • Sexually activities with toys or other children, such as simulating sex with dolls or asking other children / siblings to behave sexually
