BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The ‘Boombox Battle of the Bands’ is here in the capital city this weekend. It’s the second annual event against Jackson State. This time it’s in blue and gold territory.

“Southern University and Jackson State is a long history of music excellence,” said Dr. Kedric D. Taylor, Southern University band director.

Dr. Taylor says both schools were strategic about the timing of this show.

“I think right now is when our both bands are at their peak. So, for us to be able to host it at this time, I think it’s going to be great. Students are very excited. I talked to Dr. Little from Georgia State and he’s excited. His students are excited. So, I promise you it’s going to be a treat,” said Taylor.

Dr. Taylor says battle of the bands is a production. Fans can expect nearly a two-hour performance.

“Man, it’s exciting to be in the band. It’s like a sport, almost. We don’t physically hit like pads or shooting the ball, but playing instruments and playing the latest and the greatest and having the best arrangement. All of that goes into battle of the bands,” said Taylor.

Similar to the Bayou Classic in New Orleans, this event is about showcasing the talent, culture, and uniqueness of Historically Black College and University (HBCU) bands.

“When you think about the Southern University Human Jukebox. Everybody knows about that band. No matter where you go in America, they know about the Southern University Human Jukebox. Even in Germany,” said Taylor.

The show starts promptly at 5 p.m. on Sunday at the A.W. Mumford Stadium. Dr. Taylor says special guests will be in attendance.

Tickets are available on Ticketmaster or the Human Jukebox website.
