Southern University’s Lacumba statue unveiled on Saturday

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The statue of Lacumba was unveiled by Southern University and Attorney Tony Clayton on Saturday, Oct. 23.

The bronze statue was placed in the center of Tony Clayton Championship Plaza, according to Southern University Athletics. Athletic Director Roman Banks, Chairman of the Advancement Committee of the SU System James Brown and SU President Ray Belton were present at the unveiling.

Clayton wants to add a million-dollar recreation center on campus and a $100,000 granite fountain to elevate the statue up, according to a news release.

There will be more unveilings planned in the future, according to Director of Development of the SU System Foundation Robert Harrison. Additional features will be added to the Lacumba statue and athletes’ names will be engraved around the plaza.
