BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Mandeville man turned himself in to police Wednesday in connection to a hit-and-run killing a 44-year-old man crossing the road over the weekend.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said Walter Brister IV, 21, of Mandeville allegedly hit and killed Jude Jarreau, 44, in the 500 block of Ben Hur Road around midnight Sunday, Oct. 9. Police said Brister fled the area before officers arrived. Brister is the son of former NFL quarterback Walter Andrew “Bubby” Brister III.

On Sunday, detectives were told Brister was going to turn himself in to officers and it was planned that he would appear at the First District Precinct on the morning of Oct. 12, according to police documents.

An affidavit said while talking to detectives, Brister admitted to driving the black Range Rover in the hit-and-run and acknowledged he hit something but continued driving and didn’t try to call the police.

Brister was arrested and booked into EBR Parish Prison on a felony hit-and-run driving charge.

Funeral services for Jarreau, a father of two, are planned for Thursday, Oct. 13 in Donaldsonville.
