NEW ROADS, La. (BRPROUD) — The Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the suspect in a weekend murder has been arrested. The suspect allegedly shot and killed two victims and one victim was hospitalized.
Sheriff Rene Thibodeaux said 24-year-old Morris Hollins of New Roads was arrested Monday afternoon after being on the run for at least two days.
Thibodeaux also confirmed all of the victims and the alleged shooter are related.
The shooting happened on Friday, Sept. 18 at about 10:00 p.m. on Delta Place Road in New Roads. Thibodeaux said when deputies arrived at the scene, they found two of the three victims dead and another suffering from gunshot wounds.
“[The] first call was at least one person down maybe two and when we get there on the scene, unfortunately, two people were shot laying in the street and a third person was shot that had to be air medic to Baton Rouge,” said Thibodeaux.
He said the incident that rocked the close-knit community could have been prevented.
“Forty minutes prior to the call of shots being fired, one of my uniform patrol deputies was dispatched to the scene [where] there was a family argument going on,” said Thibodeaux.
Instead of letting law enforcement deescalate the situation, reports say people came out of the house to alert responding deputies that the person causing the disturbance had left and “everything is fine now we don’t need the police.”
Forty minutes after the initial call, the sheriff’s office was called back to the scene.
“That person left, came back 40 minutes later, and then shots were fired, two people dead on the streets and a third person injured,” said Thibodeaux.
He said no matter the crime it has no place in Pointe Coupee.
“We do not want violence here in Pointe Coupee, it will not be tolerated,” said Thibodeaux.
The person who was injured was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center and is receiving treatment for their injuries.
