BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A man is dead and a woman is injured after a drive-by shooting Wednesday in Baton Rouge.

Officers arrived late Wednesday morning at the shooting scene on Madison Avenue.

One woman is mourning the loss of someone who she considered family.

“This has to stop,” said Karyn Gray, a neighbor.

Baton Rouge Police identified the victim who died as 24-year-old Kevonta Veals. A second victim, a 22-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital.

Gray reacted to news of another fatal shooting, this time along the street she calls home. She says it’s a sad day for everyone.

“They just buried his aunt two weeks ago. He was a sweet child. He may have had his little problems, but he was not a rowdy child. He was not a child who stood on the corner, he stood in front of his grandmother’s house. That’s the furthest he went,” she said.

Gray, who has called this neighborhood home for fifty-three years, says Veals was sitting on his porch when a car drove up, shots were fired and his life was lost. Gray believes that everyone needs to put the guns down.

“We run it from the living room to the den every night because of gunfire. You know, I’m taking cover in my own home and it’s not fair to me, all those children. I can’t even bring the kids outside because of the guns,” exclaimed Gray.

Police said the investigation is ongoing. If you know anything, you are urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 225-344-7867.
