This one is for the dogs: New dog park opening in Prairieville

Local News

PRAIRIEVILLE, La (BRPROUD) ––– A new park is opening in Ascension Parish, but before you load your kids in the car, this one is for the dogs.

Members of Ascension Parish Government held a private ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday morning, but to celebrate the new park, there will be a grand opening ceremony on Saturday that will be open to the public.

The Prarie Dogs dog park is the newest addition to Prairieville Park and is the product of an initiative by Leadership Ascension. The program is sponsored by The Ascension Chamber of Commerce to identify and prepare emerging community leaders for leadership positions in local government, business, and civic affairs.

The team behind the project calls themselves The Prairie Dogs and includes Monika Arnold (EATEL), Darby Lambert (Ascension Public Schools), Evan Mativi (OneSource EHS) Jacob Shoemake (Westlake Chemical), Tia Starr (Our Lady of the Lake – Ascension), and Shontel Stewart (BASF).

The Prairie Dogs took on the project because they said there was nothing like it in the area.

“We didn’t have a public place for four dogs to go and roam about, and we needed that. We needed somewhere to bring our dogs and to socialize and for them and us to get exercise we all need and deserve,” says Monika Arnold.

The grand opening event will be on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 3 – 6 p.m. at 38430 Highway 929, Prairieville, LA.
